What I’m currently watching…

The Philadelphia Story
Starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart.  Sigh.  What a love story.  Just so we’re clear, I do not generally enjoy romantic movies at all.  But this is the great Kate Hepburn.  So it’s full of strong womanhood, comedy, and phenomenal acting.  This one’s worth watching twice!

What I’m currently listening to…

Clutch: (any album)
I’m going to see Clutch play at fun little venue here in town on Wednesday.  They are always great in concert.  Truly a great rock band, that do nothing but put out albums and tour.  I missed the last show a couple months ago because the lead singer had vocal problems.  Bama is joining me and hopefully will rock out along with me.

The countdown begins September 23, 2008

It is officially one more week at the law firm.  My last day is next Wednesday – a week from tomorrow.  I am slowly bringing home items that took me five months to get to the office, books for reference, CDs for entertainment, food for nourishment, etc. 

I leave for Canada to visit Barbie next Thursday – a week and two days away.  And I start my new job the following Tuesday – two weeks from today.  So, start the countdown calendar. 

P.S. I’m going climbing again this week.  Maybe I’ll remember my camera this time.

Last night I tried something new.  And I love it!  I dangled from a single rope about two stories above the ground.  Climbing-My new favorite activity! 

I joined Bama and some of her friends for climbing last night at my new gym.  We had a quick belay lesson, which is basically how you climb while harnessed in and put your faith and fragile little body into the hands of a “buddy.”  I chose Bama as my buddy, because, well if I’m going to trust anyone it might as well be her.  I know where she lives.  After our lesson, the unknowing instructor turned us loose in the gym to turn into little monkeys crawling all over the place. 

I absolutely loved it and I must say I’m glad I’ve been working out at the gym because all the newfound strength was a bonus.  And since I’m a member at the gym, I can go climb all I want – double bonus!

Never seen this before and I guess I didn’t really know much about it.  It’s opened my eyes to a whole new world of the “other Hepburn.”

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (by Gregory Maguire)
Yes, it is what you think.  And yes it is the book that the Broadway play is based on.  Just started, but it’s great so far.

Big news September 16, 2008

Thank goodness for small miracles.  I found out today that I’m being released from the hell that is law-firm-life.  My relief came in the form of a new job offer from a magnolia league university (my alma mater to be exact).  No, I’m not teaching, but rather I’ll be doing contracts–what I’m much happier doing.  No more litigation!  No more late nights! No more hostile workplace! Hello work-life balance! Hello happier Sally!  Hello LIFE!

I will dredge on for a couple more weeks at the firm. Then I’ll take a well-deserved break. And a fun trip to visit Barbie in Canada.  Then I get to enjoy my new job (with better benefits, better hours, and better pay).

A Sign September 9, 2008

Last week turned out to be another stressful one with a couple more late nights unfortunately.  On one particularly stressful day, I was only able to go to lunch at 5 o’clock.  Yes, that is correct, lunch at 5pm.  Naturally, since I work downtown nearly all the businesses shut down (except for sit-down establishments that I didn’t have time for) well before quittin’ time.  I managed to walk several blocks to a sandwich place as it was closing.  After grasping my bag of nourishment and venturing out into the wind that was the fortune teller of the thunderstorm on its way, I headed back to the office.

Then I came across this sign at a church on Church Street.  Given all my dissatisfaction and stress lately with my job, I had to double-check that my sleep-deprived eyes and mind weren’t making it up.  I went back later that weekend so I could get photographic proof.

Good ole time September 7, 2008

Saturday was…well…a good ole time.

It’s the first weekend with Barbie gone. So I’m working on adjusting. After a morning of running errands, I called Bama. She and some of her ‘school-friends’ were going to the state fair to see the monster truck show. I immediately volunteered to chaperone their outing! I mean c’mon, monster trucks?! City girls get excited by the weirdest things! [Clarification: City girl = Sally. I was very excited to join them, hence the emphasis on "immediately volunteered" above.]

Upon entering the fair, we cruised the games, food, etc. Talk about stimulus overload!

Then we headed to the monster truck show. Yay! Which included stunt motorcycle riders. Bonus Yay! For your viewing enjoyment…

Afterwards, Bama and I went to the local pub by my house for a glass of unassuming wine. With some liquid relaxation in us, we called up some of her ‘school-friends’ we left at the fair earlier, and met the girls at the local Hustler Hollywood store for some more fun. The other girls had a great time giggling and learning. It was a great night all around!

Interesting hump day September 3, 2008

Today was a very interesting day. Filled with ups and downs, good and bad, fears and hopes confirmed and those still unconfirmed. The details are still fuzzy, but will hopefully come into focus sooner rather than later. I just keep telling myself “serenity now” and hoping that I will eventually reach that Nirvana that is the weekend.
