Deal huntin’
January 19, 2009

This past week I did some successful deal hunting.  First I hit up the overpriced brand name big box department store that’s closing here at the already dead mall.  They are closing a few throughout the country, including one such retailer here.  Although the prices are generally marked up and the clearance was almost entirely only 30% off, I managed to get a sweater, a sweater dress, 2 sweater coats, 4 pairs of shoes, 6 pairs of funky socks, a necklace and 2 pairs of earrings for around $200!  Quite a haul if I say so myself.  It is worth the trip to find the things that are either 50% off or are already marked down plus an additional % off.

I also visited this local news station’s website in search of a particular news nugget, when I came across this page.  Talk about great deals!  In particular, I found a set of 2-$25 gift cards for $25 for my hair salon.  So, I bought two pairs!  In case you’re keeping track, that’s $100 (that I will spend anyway) for $55! (including shipping)  That’s free money folks!!  And as I’ve already admitted, I do pay a pretty penny to coif, but it’s totally worth it – and now I do it with free money!  Thank you news station!!!  And you better believe I’m going to check it often for more fabulous (free money) deals!

And finally, this one is actually from a couple weeks ago, but too good not to share.  The first Saturday of the month at Goodwill is 50% off everything in the store.  This month I just happened to stop by and came across this gem, marked only $19.99!! Which means it was only $10!!!

Though I’m not in love with the color, I can afford to spend some time with a little black spray paint.  It’s in fabulous condition and I’ve always wanted my own really nice music stand that isn’t preceded by the word “wire,” but I always thought I’d have to shell out at least $50-$100!  Once I master the spray paint job (and it warms up here), I’ll post the pictures.  Maybe I’ll even pull out the bassoon and soak a few reeds!!

Awesomest Saturday ever!

Yesterday was, in one word, Fabulous! First of all, I didn’t have to work, and was able to sleep in some. Then I went to see my fabulous hair dresser, which is always fun and entertaining. Barbie met me there just around the time he was drying my hair and styling it.

By then, it was about lunchtime, so I introduced Barbie to Which Wich. I love that place! There’s one right next to my hairdresser, super convenient! We then trekked over to buy some school supplies tax-free for Barbie. She made quite the haul, and saved a ton! While we were in the office store, I got a call that my new bed was ready and they will deliver it next Saturday. So, we proceeded to shop in various linens stores and departments. I saw a lot of things I love and can’t afford and a lot of things I can afford but do not like. We also took Barbie’s gorgeous wedding and engagement rings to be cleaned.

While shopping in another store, I found a small suitcase that is small enough to be carry-on friendly (whatever that means). I have been looking for one for a long time, so I no longer have to borrow from other people for weekend trips. The best part, it was a great price (although not tax-free) and a fantastic shade of purple. While purple isn’t my favorite color, I wanted a suitcase that was a different color so I could easily spot it at the airport and this does the trick. At the same store, Barbie came across a lunch box-thingie that didn’t have a tag or price on it. She proceeded to the counter and offered the guy $5 for it and he said she can have it for $4! She is the master! He made a $4 price tag for her and I promptly put it on her shirt.

$4/each. They are impressive!

After pricing Barbie, we were both thirsty power-shoppers on a hot Saturday. We stopped at a convenience store to get a fountain drink. We filled up and went to the counter to pay. The lady behind the counter asked “is that all?” and let us both have our drinks for free!!! Um, did I mention FREE?!!!

Then we power-shopped some more. I never made it to Barbie’s house to knit and eat dessert because it was so late, but I had a fabulous time!!

Coming up for air
July 31, 2008

I have been trapped deep in the dark recesses of work-hell. Yes, Sally is the princess locked away in the dark law dungeon! But a princess has to eventually come up for air and see the light, and more importantly eat(!) and sleep(!). Work has been particularly hellish the past few weeks, and while I catch my breath, let me share some of the good in addition to the bad and ugly.

I started going to these new work-out classes. I enjoyed the first one so much I joined the gym, well it’s actually not a traditional gym as you can tell from the website. But I save money on going to the classes, can learn a new skill, and meet cute, outdoorsy people at the same time. Lil’ E told me about the class and we usually go together. It’s early in the morning (great so I can get it in before work), really close to my neighborhood (great because I like my sleep and don’t like to commute), and it is b-r-u-t-a-l (great because I like pain and tight abs)! This class takes “no pain, no gain” to an entirely new level. Think Pilates meets circuit training meets strength training meets boot camp meets early in the morning. I feel great (even through the soreness and trembling) and hope it’ll make me look even better. Princesses need to look good and feel good.

I finally bought a new bed (and dresser and chest)! I’ve been looking for a long time. It’s time for the princess to lay her head down on a new (queen size) bed. I was at a special event for a local charity at furniture store I never even considered browsing. A girl can’t turn down a little free wine and cheese while helping out a great organization. I even found something that seemed to suit my needs. And the best part…saved an additional 15% on the purchase because of the special event and proceeds go to the charity. I don’t know when it will be delivered, they have to get it in stock, but once it comes I’ll take pictures. (sorry the online photos don’t do it justice) However, this also means I need find a new mattress. That’s what happens when you upgrade your bed, the mattress gets an upgrade too. I also need to look into new linens, etc. I’m improving the look and energy in my bedroom (although the energy has been fairly good lately). Princesses need a fabulous place to get their beauty sleep.

This weekend is Sales Tax Holiday weekend. That means I get to go do some shopping. I need some new pens (hate the cheapos at work). And who couldn’t use some new clothes and shoes (minus the nearly 10% sales tax)? Princesses love new clothes and SHOES and don’t like to pay high taxes. I’m getting my hair cut on Saturday (yay for princess pampering) and then I’ll meet up with Barbie and hit some stores. Later, we’ll chill out knitting and eating some kind of decadent dessert at her house.

Phew, this princess is pooped. She needs to store up the beauty sleep for this weekend.
